About: Decitabine (Dacogen)

Decitabine (Dacogen), is an anti-cancer medication that belongs to the drug classes of antimetabolites and demethylation agents. As an antimetabolite, Decitabine is used in chemotherapy by interfering with enzymes reactions, necessary for DNA synthesis. This causes a cytotoxic reaction, by killing rapidly dividing cancer cells. As a demethylation agent, Decitabine decreases methylation. Methylation is a process of silencing tumor suppressor genes. Decitabine is most commonly used to treat certain types of blood and bone marrow cancers.

Refractory Anemia with Excess Blasts (RAEB)

Refractory Anemia with Ringed Sideroblasts (RARS)

Refractory Anemia (RA)

Chronic Myelomonocytic leukemia

Intermediate-1, Intermediate-2, and High-risk International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) groups

Decitabine is used to treat previously treated and untreated Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and MDS sub-types, most commonly used to treat higher-risk MDS. MDS is a condition where the bone marrow produces abnormal blood cells. Decitabine helps bone marrow to produce normal blood cells and kills abnormal cells in the bone marrow. Decitabine can increase blood counts, lower the risk of transfusions, and lower the risk for leukemia. In some cases Decitabine can increase life expectancy.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Decitabine is used to treat patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Decitabine is well-tolerated among the elderly, which are the majority of AML patients, and commonly used as an alternative to more aggressive types of chemotherapy. As a demethylating agent, Decitabine interacts with DNA, to promote the growth tumor suppressor gene cells. This induces the death of leukemia cells. Decitabine also helps bone marrow to restore growth of normal blood cells.
