About: Ondansetron
Ondansetron (Zofran) belongs to the drug class of 5HT3 (serotonin type 3) receptor antagonist. Ondansetron works by blocking serotonin, the body’s natural substance that causes vomiting. Because Ondansetron is generally well tolerated, it can help prevent vomiting and nausea in several ways, and can be used to treat various ailments.
INDICATIONS
Chemotherapy
Ondansetron is a first generation 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that works by blocking serotonin when it is released by cells along the gastrointestinal tract, damaged by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This blocks the transmission of impulses to vomit from reaching the brain.
Postoperative
Ondansetron is used as a post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) preventative. PONV is a common unpleasant adverse reaction of surgery and general anesthesia. Ondansetron has the highest binding harmony to the 5-HT3 receptor out of its drug class, with an elimination half-life of approximately 40 hours which provides extended relief to patients receiving the drug.
Acute gastroenteritis
Ondansetron can be used to treat acute gastroenteritis, a common cause of physician and emergency room visits in infants and young children. Acute gastroenteritis, commonly caused by viruses, causes excessive vomiting. Ondansetron is highly potent and quickly absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, achieving peak plasma concentrations after only 1 h to 2 hours after oral administration.
